Description
Half-length portrait showing Nehemiah Grew in an oval frame surmounted by a flowering branch of Grewia, which Carl Linnaeus named in his honour. Grew is shown in a dark wig and white cravat, he is turned towards the left and looks out towards the viewer. Below the portrait is a view of the courtyard at Gresham College, where the Royal Society meetings took place during Grew’s term as secretary.

Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712), British botanist and physiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1671. He served as Secretary from 1677-1679.
