    Description
    A paper cut-out in the shape of a large herring which accompanied a written account of a very large herring (19 1/2 inches long and 5 inches wide) from Scotland. The paper was presented by Robert Moray at the meeting of the Royal Society. on 1 July 1663.
    Object history
    At the meeting of the Royal Society on 1 July 1663, ‘Sir Robert Moray communicated likewise an account of a very large herring, caught upon the coast of Scotland, which, according to that account, contained in length 19 ½ inches, and in breadth, without the fins, 5 inches’ (Birch 1:271).
