    Description
In the scheme, AA, BB and CC are rings made of pewter, with linen and cap paper stretched between them, and kept in place with a frame DD. EE is the screw for tightening the frame. The liquid to be filtered is then poured into the funnel F, which pours into A and through the filters by the pressure of its height.

This apparatus was demonstrated at the meeting of the Royal Society on 26 May 1686, and the figure was subsequently printed in Denis Papin's A continuation of the new digester of bones (1687).
    Object history
At the meeting of the Royal Society on 26 May 1686, ‘Dr. Papin gave in an account of an instrument for filtration of his own contrivance, which was by pouring the liquor into a long-necked funnel, whereby the hight of the liquor being considerable, the pressure thereof would be great upon the pores of the filtre; which would occasion a speedier filtration. The experiment was shewn before the Society, and succeeded’ (Birch 4:486).

The account is registered in RBO/6/321 with the legend but without the image.

Printed in Denis Papin, A continuation of the new digester of bones (London: J. Streater, 1687), fig. 10, p. 37.
