Description
Denis Papin's design of a metal coil for heating. The figure shows a vessel with a 'worm' (metal coil) inserted into a hole in the middle of the bottom. Papin reported that when heated with a lamp from underneath, the water in the vessel heated up more quickly with the 'worm' in the vessel, rather than without. Papin reported that he experimented with a 'worm' with only one turn, but suggested one with more turns would heat up the water even more expeditiously. Papin suggested that this would be useful for 'several trades' in his A continuation of the new digester of bones (1687). The illustration used in the book shows five coils.
