Description
A theory of the tides at the coast of Tonqueen (current-day Vietam). This theory by the astronomer Edmond Halley was based on the account of Francis Davenport, who had lived in Tonquin. The report was delivered to the Royal Society by Charles Bayly.

Object history
At the meeting of the Royal Society on 23 April 1684, ‘Mr. Bailey having delivered in an account of the tides, at Tonquin, procured from persons, who had lived long in the place; it was ordered to be registered’ (Birch 4:289). Birch 289n notes that it does not appear in the Register, but that a letter from Francis Davenport dated 17 July 1678 is printed in Phil. Trans. no. 162.
