Description
Half-length portrait of Stephen Hales in an oval frame, he wears a dark robe, a white clerical collar and a mid-length wig. He is turned towards the left with his head turned back to look out towards the viewer. Mezzotint engraving after a painting of Hales now in the National Portrait Gallery.

Stephen Hales (1677-1761), British physiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718. He was awarded the Copley Medal 1739.
