Description
Half-length portrait of Stephen Hales with a clerical collar and white wig in an oval frame. Below the portrait there is view of a building with columns resembling a classical temple in a natural setting. In front of the buildings stands a potted plant in a bell jar and a large pipette which connects a tree to a bowl of water.
Inscribed below: ‘THE REVD DR STEPHEN HALES, F.R.S./AUTHOR OF VEGETABLE STATICS.’ ‘Coates R.A. pinxt/Hopwood sculpt/London, Published by Dr Thornton Decr 1.1800.’
Stephen Hales (1677-1761), British physiologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718. He was awarded the Copley Medal 1739.
