Design of a watch with a straight spring, included in a letter by Joachim d’Alencé to Henry Oldenburg, dated 1 September 1676, Paris.

A. cock.
B. spring which acts upon the balance wheel at the point D, and by the other end, which is stronger, is fixed at point E.
F. movable piece through which the spring passes to advance or retard the watch by means of the screw G
