    Stephen Gray sent in his observations of sunspots to Hans Sloane, which were read at the meeting of the Royal Society on 14 February 1705. This figure, labelled Fig. IIII (upside down) shows the basic chart of the Sun used to record the sunspots.

    Object history
    14 February 1705, 'A Letter was Read from Mr Gray to Dr Sloane concerning some spots which he had observed in the Sun. Mr Hunt was order'd to send him Scheiner & Galileo on these subjects, he promising to return them in reasonable time' (JBO/11/64).
