    Description
Small pen drawing of a shield surrounded by the symbols for mercury and sulphur on either side. This image was drawn within the text of a letter from Balthasar de Monconys (1611-1665) to Robert Moray, dated 1 August 1664. The letter describes Monconys's travels to Germany and Italy, experiments to show the electric force of the air, experiments with gold, a child who could not read or write but could perform complicated arithmetic, black coral in Italy and the bones and teeth of an elephant of Hannibal.
