    Figure of a stone with a sharp edge resembling a poleaxe used in antiquity. This figure was included in a letter from Dr Charles Preston to Hans Sloane. In the letter, Preston says the stone was found on a hill in the north country called 'Catterfane' Hill. This letter was read to the Royal Society on 27 October 1697.

    Charles Preston (1660–1711), was professor of botany at the University of Edinburgh.
