At the meeting of the Royal Society on 3 March 1697, ‘There was read a letter from Sr Rob. Sibbald at Edinb. Dat. Jan 30 1696/7 to Dr Lister with a description & figure of a nautilus lately found in Scotland in the North of that Kingdom it appear’d & was thought by Dr Hooke & most present to be ye shell of ye common nautilus’ (JBO/10/17).
