Description
Full length portrait, supposed to be of Simon de Montfort (c. 1170-1218), Lord of Montfort l'Amaury in the Île-de-France; father of the eighth Earl of Leicester. De Montfort is shown in armour (but without helm) and a cloak, holding a marshal’s baton in his right hand, and the left hand resting on the hilt of a broadsword. The whole is enclosed by a double rectangular framing line with surrounding text outside. The De Montfort coat of arms appears above the main image. Possibly copied from a print (see for example the National Portrait Gallery, D20166). From the papers of Robert Boyle.

Object history
A similar 18th century engraved image is in London, the National Portrait Gallery, NPG D20166. This printed version shares the same central portrait, the heraldic arms above the main image, the commencing header and the lower Latin inscription. It differs in being without the surrounding text and having illustrative vignettes.
