Object history

The Royal Society financially supported the posthumous publication of Francis Willughby's Historia piscium (1686), which required textual supplement and additions by John Ray, Tancred Robinson and Martin Lister. This drawing was for the Cornish gunnel (tab. G8, fig. 3: Gunnellus Cornubiensium), found in the town of St Ives in Cornwall (p. 116).
