Object history
The Royal Society financially supported the posthumous publication of Francis Willughby's Historia piscium (1686), which required textual supplement and additions by John Ray, Tancred Robinson and Martin Lister. Lister was also instrumental in gathering drawings from various sources to illustrate the text. This drawing by Henry Hunt was for the 'Lumpus Anglorum' (tab. N11), whose English name was given in the text as the lump or sea owl, or 'Cock-paddle' in Scottish (p. 208). This publication was a financial flop for the Society.
