    Head and shoulders portrait in gown, wig and falling bands. Oval surround with decorative acanthus, coat of arms below.

    Inscribed: “R.White delin. G.White Sculp. Johannes Harris. A.M. Regiae Societatis Socius. Aetat. Suae 37.” In pencil lower left “El 1696 dd 1719”. In pencil verso “Bought 22.4.1892 6d”

    Originally printed in Harris’s Lexicon technicum; or, An universal English dictionary of arts and sciences, explaining not only the terms of art but the arts themselves (London, 1704).

    John Harris was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1696.
