    Description
Diagram of a solar eclipse. In his letter to Richard Towneley dated 6 July 1676 from Greenwich, John Flamsteed conveyed Jean Dominique Cassini's observation of a solar eclipse (1 June 1676) observed through telescopic sights. Cassini had sent his observation to Henry Oldenburg (EL/C1/70), which was then printed in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. 11, no. 127 (1676). Though the eclipse could not be observed well in London, Flamsteed believed that the use of a micrometer would have given a more accurate reading than Cassini's.
