    Description
Figure of the Sun for measuring contractions of its diameter as a result of refraction of the air. In his letter to Richard Towneley dated 25 November 1673, John Flamsteed relayed his measurement of the diameter of the sun in order to corroborate Jean Dominique Cassini's theory of refraction in Specimen observationum Bononiensum (Bologna, 1656).
