    Description
Three-quarter length seated portrait of David Hartley the Younger showing him in spectacles, a fur-trimmed coat and a dark overshirt with a white collar beneath. His right hand rests on a small table beside an inkwell, scroll and a stack of books. A clouded sky can be seen behind him.

The scroll on the table beside Hartley is inscribed: ‘Definitive Treaty/ with the United States/ of America/ Sept 3 1783’, referring to the Treaty of Paris which Harris had negotiated on the British side to bring about the end to the American Revolutionary War.

David Hartley (1732-1813), British statesman, was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. His father, David Hartley (1705-1757), British philosopher and psychologist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1736.
