Description
A figure in a manuscript by Edme Mariotte (1620-1684) about a new level for surveying land. Mariotte sought the opinion of the Royal Society about his new method through Henry Justel. The manuscript was presented to the Society on 4 May 1671 and Christopher Wren was asked to examine it. The President, William Brouncker, had read it and thought it was worth publishing. It was published as Traitté [sic] du nivellement, avec la description de quelques niveaux nouvellement (Paris: J. Cusson, 1672), including most (though not all) of the figures in this manuscript.
Object history
4 May 1671, ‘There was produced by Mr. Oldenburg a manuscript sent to him from Paris by Monsr. Mariotte, one of the Royal Academy of Sciences there, about leveling, and some new methods of performing it, written in French; the author desiring in a letter written by Monsr. Justel, April 29, 1671, that it might be communicated to the Royal Society. This manuscript was delivered to Dr. Wren, who was desired to examine it, and to make a report of his thoughts about it to the society’ (Birch 2:479).
11 May 1671, ‘There was again produced by Mr. Oldenburg the French manuscript composed and sent by Monsr. Mariotte about leveling; upon which the author desired the judgment of the society, who ordered it to be delivered to Dr. Wren then present, for his consideration’ (Birch 2:481).
8 June 1671, ‘The president [William Brouncker] made a report of Mons. Mariotte’s treatise about leveling and certain new instruments described by him for exact leveling, viz. that he thought the author had well considered that whole matter, and that his instruments were well contrived for exact practice; and that the manuscript deserved to be published’ (Birch 2:483).
Printed on plate 2 from Edme Mariotte, Traitté [sic] du nivellement, avec la description de quelques niveaux nouvellement (Paris: J. Cusson, 1672), fig. 12.
