Description
Three-quarter length portrait of Samuel Sturmy (1633-1669) holding a globe, in an oval frame. This was used as a frontispiece to his book, The Mariner's Magazine (1669). Though not a Fellow, Sturmy sent in his observations on the variation of the magnetic needle to Henry Oldenburg (see for example Birch 2:288).
