Portrait of Petrus Apianus, engraved by Phillips Galle for his portrait series published as Virorum doctorum de disciplinis benemerentium effigies XLIIII (Antwerp, 1572). Framed with coloured slips of decorative pattern.
Petrus Apianus (1495-1552) was a German humanist, mathematician, astronomer and cartographer.
From a set of albums known as Collectanea Newtoniana, a selection of prints, original artwork and manuscripts relating to Newton, collected by Charles Turnor (1768-1853). Turnor was an astronomer, collector and Fellow of the Royal Society. He owned Woolsthorpe Manor (Newton’s birthplace).
