Description
Half-length portrait of Claude Adrien Helvétius facing towards the right, as viewed, with his head turned slightly towards his right and his eyes looking out towards the viewer. He is shown wearing a fur-trimmed jacket with a frilled shirt.
Inscribed below: ‘Lith. de Delpech. Paris./Maurin/HELVÉTIUS/helvétius/Tiré de la collection de M. Roehn.’
Likely collected as it was thought to depict Jean-Claude-Adrien Helvétius (1685-1755), French physician, who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1755, this engraving instead shows his son, Claude-Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771), French philosopher, who was not a Fellow.
