Description
A mechanical barograph in its mahogany carry case, for recording changes in air pressure. Vacuum capsules [right as viewed] react to pressure changes, which lift or lower the writing arm. Inside the drum [left] is a mechanical clock. A paper chart is mounted to the drum and as it turns the stencil at the tip of the arm marks changes of pressure.
Short & Mason was founded in London in 1864 by Thomas Watling Short and William James Mason. They were makers of barometers, anemometers and compasses. Neither Short or Mason was a Fellow of the Royal Society.
