    Description
    A decorative thermometer mounted on a carved backboard. The bulb is surrounded by a leafy wreath and the stem and capillary tube snake upwards to the tip.

    Plate 13 from a German translation of Joachim d’Alence’s Tractatus de barometris…(Ludwig Bourgeat, Mainz, 1688), an early account of meteorological instruments including barometers, thermometers and hygrometers.

    Joachim d’Alence (16..-1707) French astronomer and physician was not a Fellow of the Royal Society.
