    Seated, three quarter length portrait of William Thomson, his hands folded in his lap. He wears a white shirt and black suit jacket underneath his University [of Cambridge?] robes, and wears his beard long. The wooden turned arms of his chair are visible on either side.

    Signed by the artist in the bottom right corner: 'T. Hamilton Crawford'

    William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs, (1824–1907), mathematician and physicist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851.
