Description
Primitive map showing two named islands, within an archipelago. The larger island has a cartouche headed ‘Zzubu’, the smaller ‘Mattam’, modern day Cebu and Matcan islands in the Philippines. Ferdinand Magellan was killed at the Battle of Matcan on 27 April 1521.

This French version of Pigafetta’s account of the Magellan voyage was translated from a manuscript discovered in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan. Only a small selection of the original images appeared in this book.
