    William Bowman (1816-1892) British surgeon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1841. He identified what became known as the Bowman’s capsule, a key component of the nephron, for which he was awarded the Royal Medal in 1842. He served as Vice President of the Society between 1866-1867 and 1997-1888.
