    Seated portrait of John Edward Gray turned to the right [as viewed], looking out at the camera. He wears a white shirt underneath a dark waistcoat and dinner jacket, his hair short with side-whiskers. A table is visible on his right, on which rests three specimen jars.

    John Edward Gray (1800-1875) British zoologist and museum curator was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1832. He served as Keeper in Zoology at the British Museum from 1840-1874.
