Description
Half-length portrait of Benjamin Hoadly in profile, within an oval frame. Hoadly is wearing liturgical vestments and a medallion depicting Saint George. A Latin motto is inscribed on the top of the frame reading veritas et patria, which translates as ‘Truth and Country’.
Inscribed below: ‘BEN. HOADLY, D.D./Bishop of Winchester./Aged LXXX./Drawn by N Hone, after a Wax Model by Mr Gosset, done in the year 1756 and Engraved by James Basire 1772,’
Benjamin Hoadly (1676-1761), British clergyman, was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. However, his son Benjamin Hoadly (1706-1757), British physician, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1757.
