    Three quarter length portrait of Lyon Playfair turned to the right [as viewed]. He wears a white shirt underneath a dark cravat, waistcoat and dinner jacket, his hair short with side-whiskers. He holds one hand behind his back, the other rests on his left breast pocket.

    Lyon Playfair, first Baron Playfair (1818-1898) British politician and chemist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1948 and served as Vice President between 1874 and 1875.
