Description
Three-quarter length portrait of John Hobart in courtly dress with a chain of office around his shoulders. He is turned slightly towards his right, with his left hand resting on his hip above his sheathed sword. His right hand is open with his index finger outstretched and his thumb and middle finger forming an open circle. An ornate crown can be seen behind him.

John Hobart, 1st Earl of Buckinghamshire (1693-1756), British politician, was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. However, his son John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire (1723 - 1793), British courtier, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1785
