Dominique Francois Jean Arago (1786-1853) French mathematician, physicist and astronomer was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1818. His contributions to magnetism and his co-discovery with Leon Foucault FRS (1819- 1868) of eddy currents led to his being awarded the Copley Medal in 1825.
