He wears a white cravat and dark overcoat, with star and badge of the Hanoverian Order attached, his right hand draped on his knee, his left on a large book atop a table. A patterned curtain is visible to the right behind him.

    Sir Frederick Augusta Barnard (1743-1830) British Librarian was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1790. Librarian to George III (1760-1820), he oversaw the transfer of the King’s Library to the British Museum following his death.
