The portrait formed part of a series titled Portraits of Honorary Members of the Ipswich Museum (1852): lithographic portraits by T. H. Maguire commissioned by George Ransome, founder of the Ipswich Museum.
Thomas Bell (1792-1880) British dental surgeon and zoologist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1828.
