He wears a white shirt, a black cravat, suit and dinner jacket, and holds a book ajar in his lap. Three more books are visible on a table behind him, and the cushioned arms of his chair are visible on either side.

    Signed by Billing: ‘For J.P. Gassiot. F.R.S. with kind regards of A. Billing’ and inscribed below: ‘C Baugniet 1846 London’

    Archibald Billing (1791-1881) British physician was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1844.
