Three quarter length portrait of John Peter Boileau looking to the left [as viewed]. He wears a black cravat, a grey, patterned waistcoat and a dark dinner jacket, his hair short with side-whiskers. Boileau leans back in his chair and rests his right arm over its back. Enclosed in an octagonal frame.
Inscribed below: ‘T. H. Maguire 1849’, and ‘John P. Boileau M &N HANHART LITH PRINTERS’
The portrait formed part of a series titled Portraits of Honorary Members of the Ipswich Museum (1852): lithographic portraits by T. H. Maguire commissioned by George Ransome, founder of the Ipswich Museum.
Sir John Peter Boileau (1794–1869) British antiquary was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1843 and served as its Vice-President between 1860-1861.
