Three quarter length portrait of James Scott Bowerbank looking directly out at the viewer. He wears a white shirt, a black cravat, suit and dinner jacket. He holds a rolled up manuscript in his right hand and rests his other upon a table top. Enclosed in an octagonal frame.
Inscribed below: ‘T. H. Maguire 1849’, and ‘J S Bowerbank M &N HANHART LITH PRINTERS’
The portrait formed part of a series titled Portraits of Honorary Members of the Ipswich Museum (1852): lithographic portraits by T. H. Maguire commissioned by George Ransome, founder of the Ipswich Museum.
James Scott Bowerbank (1797–1877), British geologist and zoologist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1842.
