Description
Seated portrait of Isambard Brunel turned slightly to the right [as viewed], looking directly at the viewer. He wears a white shirt and cravat underneath a dark suit and dinner jacket, his hands folded in his lap. His chair is leathered and buttoned, with cushioned arms and scrolled handles, and a table is visible to his right. Resting on the table is a collection of papers and books, a lamp and a printed picture depicting an underground tunnel: likely the Thames Tunnel.
Signed in the bottom right by Brunel and inscribed: ‘PAINTED BY S. DRUMMOND, A.R.A. ENGRAVED BY J. CARTER.’
Sir (Marc) Isambard Brunel (1769–1849) British civil engineer was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1814 and served as its Vice-President between 1832-1834.
