    Head and shoulders portrait of George Buchanan facing right [as viewed] and looking directly out at the viewer. He wears a dark black robe and a thick-collared white shirt, his hair short with a beard.

    Inscribed below: ‘Proof no 63 H Raeburn’

    George Buchanan (1506-1582) Scottish poet, historian and administrator was not a Fellow of the Royal Society.
    Object history
    Thought to be engraved after a copy of a portrait of Buchanan held at the University of St. Andrews. The original is by an unknown artist, referred to as ‘Titian’, and the copy is by Henry Raeburn.
