Half length portrait of Hofmann, standing with his right hand crooked at the hip, the left resting upon book. The sitter is shown with spectacles and a short beard and moustaches. He wears a dark coat over a lighter waistcoat showing a watch-chain, white shirt and bow tie.
Inscribed: “Engraved by Cook from an original Portrait. PROFESSOR A.W.HOFMANN PH.D. PROFESSOR IN THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF CHEMISTRY. LONDON.” With a facsimile signature.
August Wilhelm Hofmann was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851.
