    Description
Half-length seated portrait showing James Holman in a high-backed armchair in white shirt and long, dark jacket. He is shown in his sixties with neat, white hair and a bushy, white beard. His eyes are depicted half-closed as Holman had become blind at the age of 25, although he continued to travel extensively.

    Inscribed below: ‘J. P. Knight Q.A. Pint/Lieut Holman/J. R. Jackson Se.’

James Holman (1786-1857), British adventurer, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826. He lost his sight during an illness in 1810 but continued to travel independently and, in 1832, became the first blind person to circumnavigate the globe.
