Professor Steven Chu (b.1948), American physicist, was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 2014. He was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics with Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and William D. Phillips in 1997 for their development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light.
