    Description
Plan of the town of Port Royal, at the entrance to Kingston Harbour, Jamaica, showing Fort Charles, the town wall and other features. The coast is highlighted in blue.

Plate 58 from Le petit atlas maritime: recueil de cartes et plans des quatre parties du monde; en cinq volumes ... vol.1, by Jacques-Nicholas Bellin (Paris, Ministere de la Marine, 1764).

Inscribed top right: ‘Tome I. No.58.’ With a cartouche top left: ‘PLAN DE LA VILLE DE PORT ROYAL’. The three main features of the town are listed on a key: ‘A. l’Eglise. B. Magasins pour les Vaisseaux. C. Magasin pour les Mats.’ [Church, stores for vessels, stores for sailing]. With a scale: ‘Echelles de Cent Toises’ [scale of one hundred toises].

Port Royal was originally a Spanish colonial settlement, captured and renamed by the English. Built on a sand bar, the town was devasted by successive earthquakes in 1692 and 1907, the latter destroying most of the original Royal Navy and other buildings.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) French hydrographer was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1753.
