    Plate depicting various stone specimens inscribed in Latin, found near Lancaster, England, thought to be from the Roman Empire.

    Illustration to ‘I. A letter from Mr Christopher Hunter, to Dr Martin Lister, fellow of the Coll. of Phys. and R. S. concerning some Roman inscriptions found near Durham’ in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. 22, issue 266 (October 1700).

    Christopher Hunter was not a Fellow of the Royal Society, and; Martin Lister (1639-1712), British physician and naturalist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1671.
