Two figures illustrating Denis Papin’s latest improvements to the Hessian bellows, intended for use in coal mines.
Illustration to ‘Part of a letter from Mr D. Papin to Dr Frederick Slare, Fellow of the College of Physicians and of the Royal Society, concerning an improvement of the Hessian bellows, &c’ in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. 24, issue 300 (June 1705). Denis Papin (1647-1713), French natural philosopher, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1680.
