Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet (1899-1985) Australian virologist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1942. He was awarded the Royal Medal in 1947 for his distinguished work on bacteriophages, viruses and immunity; and for his contributions to the study of infectious disease as an ecological phenomenon. He was also given the Copley Medal in 1959 in recognition of his distinguished contributions to knowledge of viruses and of immunology and gave the Croonian Lecture in 1950, On The interaction of virus and cell-surface.
