Sir Alan Howard Cottrell (1919-2012) British metallurgist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1955 and he served on the Council between 1963-1965 and 1975-1977. He was awarded the Copley medal in 1996 in recognition of his contribution to the understanding of mechanical properties of materials and related topics through his pioneering studies on crystal plasticity, dislocation impurity interactions, fracture and irradiation effects.
