Description
Half length portrait of Howard, body turned to the viewer’s left. The sitter is in armour over which is with a sash and neck-cloth. He holds a baton in his right hand. Behind and to the left is a landscape, with a architectural pillar and drapery to the right.
A coat of arms appears below the main image, with an inscribed list of honours, commencing: “Abra.Blotling Sculp. The Effiges of the Right Hon:ble Charles Earle of CARLISLE Viscount Morpeth Baron Dacres of Gillsland, Lord Lieutenant of Cumberland & Westmoreland...” Inscribed in pencil lower left “1665”.
Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Carlisle was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1665.
