    Description
    Studies of various flora and fauna species that animalcule colonies form on, including: water grass and moss, a) and b), and water slugs, fleas and beetles c 1, 2 and 3), and; the animalcules as viewed under magnification e – v).

    Inscribed above: ‘TAB. LXXXVIII’

    The accompanying text is headed: ‘Encore quelques autres animalcules de limon’ [‘Some more salt-water animalcules’]. The author explains: ‘Il me faudroit faire tout un volume, si je voulois decrire les proprietes d'un chacun en detail. Il me suffira donc de les dessiner au plus juste, pour les faire discerner au lecteur.’ [‘I would have to do a whole volume if I wanted to describe the properties of each [animalcule] in detail. It will therefore suffice for me to draw them as accurately as possible, to make them discernible for the reader.’]

    Martin Frobene [Frobenius] Ledermuller (1719-1769) German naturalist was employed in various capacities as a notary, turning to microscope studies after an illness induced temporary deafness.
